What Causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath is common among a lot of people. Having bad breath not only makes the people around us uncomfortable, but it also makes it uncomfortable to be around people. Listed below are a few causes of bad breath:

Poor Oral Hygiene: It is recommended that you brush your teeth twice a day and floss to remove any food particles that remain in your mouth throughout the day. As a common form of bacteria forms on the teeth called plaque and it irritates the gums and contributes to bad breath.

Food: We all know by now that certain foods can cause bad breath. Examples of some of the foods you may want to avoid include garlic, onions and coffee, these types of foods affect the air you exhale and cause others around you to stay away from you.

Bacteria: Bacteria is everywhere and hundreds of bad breath causing bacteria live in your mouth. Your mouth naturally allows these bacteria to grow. After you eat, bacteria feeds on the food left in your mouth, which leaves a foul-smelling waste product that actually smells and in turn causes your breath to smell.

Dry Mouth: We’ve all experienced a dry mouth, either from exercising too long without water or even just by sleeping all night. Bad breath is usually worse upon awakening because the mouth is exposed to less oxygen and saliva during the night. Saliva is important to ensure the cleanliness of your mouth as it cleans the mouth removing bacteria growing in your mouth. Therefore, if you are feeling parched and are experiencing bad breath try drinking some water.

Smoking and Tobacco: Along with the numerous health problems smoking can have on one’s health, it also stains the teeth and reduces the ability to taste foods. Smokers are also more likely to suffer from gum disease due to the tobacco irritating gum tissue.
